Restaurant Review: Joseph Tambellini’s – Refined Classics, Done Right!

I recently had the opportunity to dine at Joseph Tambellini’s in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a wine tasting. After a quick glance of the website (and meal offerings) I knew immediately that this place was going to be something to remember.

Growing up in a large Italian family, I was constantly surrounded by delicious food and great conversation amongst my family.  As I walked into the front door of Joseph Tambellini’s, these feelings were instantly relived.  I was greeted by a very accommodating staff member and after we distinguished where I would be heading (the third floor), was led and seated in the proper area.

The decor of the entire restaurant is elegant and much like the service, homey. I felt extremely comfortable; like I just stepped foot into one of my relatives homes.  The lighting is soft and the atmosphere is calm and relaxed.

After a glass of Chardonnay, we were seated and ready for the tasting to begin.

The first course commenced with a delicious Caprese salad (and gorgeous heirloom tomatoes).

Product Review: Veganaise

I’m all about trying new products, whether they’re geared towards low-carb dieters, vegans, or freeze-dry-only diets. No really, I have some sort of excitement when I go to the grocery store and see something interesting and new, almost like a kid when he makes his way towards the toy section of the department store.

Today, my “toy” came in the form of Veganaise by Follow Your Heart. This particular product comes in five different types: Original, Grapeseed Oil, Organic, High Omega-3, and Reduced Fat.  At my grocery store, The East End Food Co-op, they only stocked three of those flavors: Grapeseed Oil, High Omega-3, and the Organic. I opted for the Organic.

This product has the following ingredients: Organic Expeller-Pressed Soybean Oil, Filtered Water, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Soy Protein (non-GMO), Sea Salt, Organic Lemon Juice Concentrate, and Organic Mustard Flour.

The nutritional information is as follows:

Taste: This stuff is pretty tasty. For my first application, I used a bit on my tomato and mozzarella sandwich with some basil. Boy is this stuff good! It’s very light and flavorful, not dense and fattening-tasting like some mayonaise. I really enjoy that there’s a very light hint of citrus as well.

If you’d want to compare it to other popular mayonnaise products, it’s nothing like Miracle Whip, and a little more subtle than Hellman’s with a citrusy, fresh kick.

Price: I’m not sure if this was everywhere, but the regular size jar of this stuff cost me almost $6.00. Even though it was a tad expensive for something like mayonnaise, I’ve had my eye on this product for a while. I knew I had to bite the bullet and just get it!

Versatility: I could see myself creating many different things with this product.  I made a delicious open-faced egg salad sandwich with Veganaise, celery, hard-boiled eggs, and paprika and topped it onto some sourdough bread. It was fantastic! It was very light, yet flavorful, and was a filling meal all in itself.

I’ve read many reviews that use it in many different vegan recipes.  This could also be used as a base for dips and creamy sauces! (Potato salad sounds amazing..will have to try that!)

Verdict: While it definitely isn’t something you can eat in pounds everyday,  Veganaise is an excellent alternative to most commercial mayonnaise products. This is a great product for both vegans and non-vegans alike. I’d really like to try the Grapeseed Oil variation next. If you can bypass the somewhat high price tag, you won’t be disappointed with it’s light and citrusy flavor!
